Spain uses the euro like France and Italy. From Benidorm to Barcelona, UK package holidays and city breaks mean heavy card use — but cash still matters for tapas bars, rural taxis and some apartment rentals.

Typical spend

Coastal resorts and islands see intense July–August demand for euros. Ordering ahead from a UK supplier usually beats walk-up airport rates, especially if you are funding a villa shop on arrival.

ATMs and paying in pounds abroad

ATMs are everywhere. If the machine asks whether to charge you in pounds or euros, choose euros — paying in sterling abroad is almost never a good deal. Check your bank’s foreign usage fees before you rely on ATMs for most of the trip.

Practical float

Carry €20 notes for ice cream, sun loungers and beach clubs where minimum card spends appear. Pair that with a travel-friendly card for restaurants and supermarkets.
