The UAE uses the UAE dirham (AED), pegged to the US dollar. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are highly card-oriented, but taxis, souks and desert excursions may prefer dirham cash.

Mall and hotel spend

Premium retail and hotels are card-first. Keep smaller notes for porters, valet tips and independent eateries.

Ordering before you fly

UK bureau stock of dirhams varies; compare our providers early. Some travellers carry dollars as a backup — understand conversion if you do.

Card fees and paying in pounds abroad

If a card terminal offers to charge you in pounds instead of dirhams, choose dirhams. Let your UK card handle the conversion if your bank offers fair rates abroad.
